PAPER & TRIAL is a series of exhibitions at Yodoyabashi MIHONCHO on paper, design, and experimentation. Each exhibition features a fine paper and the trials conducted by a participating designer in an attempt to expand the range of possibilities for that paper, presenting the experimental processes used as well as the end products.
The third installment in the “PAPER & TRIAL—KIHOUSHI & AYA CODAMA” series is coming to Fukuoka MIHONCHO, following its showing at Yodoyabashi MIHONCHO and Aoyama MIHONCHO.

The third exhibition in the series,
“PAPER & TRIAL—KIHOUSHI & AYA CODAMA,” is on tour to Aoyama MIHONCHO. It features the KIHOUSHI series of packaging papers, which is designed to appeal to the touch, fully bringing out the rich feel of paper, and participation by graphic designer Aya Codama in trials that explore the potential of the
KIHOUSHI series and sculptured embossing for rich expression through the creation of various works.
KIHOUSHI papers combine the strength of high softwood content with enhanced folding performance obtained using special surface coatings. Through sculptured embossing, Codama leverages this strength and pushes the limits of embossing, creating posters with a beautiful, three-dimensional feel. The exhibition also presents other items such as offset printing trial samples and examples of package designs.
Design: Aya Codama
Born in Osaka in 1983. Graduated from Tokyo Zokei University’s Department of Design with a degree in graphic design in 2007. Founded BULLET Inc. in 2013 after working for seven years at the design firm AWATSUJI Design. Intrigued by the appeal of design that communicates through the hands and is achieved through adept use of textures and printing processes, works on package design and other projects with the potential to go beyond the scope of graphic design. Major awards include the German Design Award, One Show (Gold), Pentawards (Platinum), Cannes Lions, D&AD (Graphite), Red Dot, iF Design Award, and Good Design Award. Currently teaches in the Department of Design at Tokyo Zokei University.
