“An outline—rinkaku in Japanese—is a line in the shape of something’s contours or perimeter.
An outline can also refer to a gist, summary, or general idea. My aim is to express outlines in
graphic design with a variety of materials.”

Takafumi Kusagaya
 
Art director and graphic designer. Born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1963. Established Kusagaya Design Inc.
in 1996. Awards include JAGDA New Designer Award, Good Design Award, Nikkei Advertising Award Grand
Prix Runner-up, and Asahi Advertising Award Grand Prize. Publications include the book printing + design.
Major projects include producing the communication tools for fashion brand ato, creating graphics for All Nippon
Airways Europe, Benesse Corporation, the National Art Center, Tokyo, and Yokohama Museum of Art, creating
the invitation leaflets for the 2005 World Exposition, Aichi, Japan, graphics for TAKEO, designing a lip gloss package
for Kracie Holdings, newspaper ads for NSK, and producing graphics for Tokyo Midtown Management. Produces graphic
art in parallel with design work, including holding solo exhibitions in 2007, 2013, and 2016. Group exhibitions include
the Japanese design exhibition “MADE IN JAPAN” in Échirolles, France in 2016-2017 and a show at TAMBOURIN GALLERY
in Aoyama, Tokyo in 2018. Memberships include Japan Graphic Designers Association (JAGDA) and Tokyo Type Directors Club (TDC).
